Anesthesiology
Anesthesia has been a pivotal factor in the success of surgeries throughout the world. No surgery in today’s modern world would be feasible without the assistance of anesthesia. Historically, folklore had various remedies in the form of different plant-based concoctions which acted as anesthesia. With the advancements in medicine came the development of safe and effective anesthetics.
Anesthesia is the branch of medicine that aims to prevent patients from feeling pain during surgical procedures. Like there are different types of surgeries, there are different specialities of doctors who practice anesthesia. One of them is anesthesiologists, whose scope spans from the pre-surgical assessment of a patient to their intraoperative supervision and post-operative care.
Anaesthesiologist
An anesthesiologist is an Anesthesia practitioner who crafts an anaesthesia care plan that ensures proper pain mitigation and provides protection from discomfort. Patients are sedated to a level where their alertness and responsiveness to stimuli are sufficiently decreased, or they may be rendered fully unconscious. In this state, surgeries can be safely performed without distress to the patients.
The assigned Anesthesiologists prepare a tailored anesthesia plan after conducting a comprehensive assessment of a patient’s medical condition and history prior to proposing the most suitable anesthesia class for surgery and other invasive therapeutic interventions. The types of anesthesia available can be classified as follows.
Based on patients’ medical conditions and health, Anaesthesiologists will recommend the following types of Anaesthesias.
- Local Anaesthesia: Local anaesthesia is utilized to numb one specific region of the body. You will not be feeling any pain during the surgery because of anaesthesia, although you will be awake. Local anaesthetics are utilized in procedures such as dental procedures, skin biopsy, and cataract surgeries.
- General Anaesthesia: This type of Anaesthesia renders you unconscious and insensible to pain and other stimuli. Medical personnel can operate on your entire body without any injury or discomfort. It is used commonly during more invasive surgical procedures or surgeries involving the chest, head, and abdomen.
- Regional Anaesthesia: This type of Anaesthesia focuses on injecting near the nerves responsible for the area that will be operated on, such as nerve blocks or spinal or epidural injections. The Anaesthesiologist monitors the patient’s bodily functions while the surgeon performs the surgical procedure.
- Sedation: The sedation anaesthesia procedure places the patient in a pleasant state of mild sedation, allowing what seems to be a more natural sleep but making them easily aroused. Anaesthesia can be light, moderate, or deep, and the sedation needed is determined by the recommended surgery and procedure by the Anesthesiologist.
